24 minutes of Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales released

CD Project Red’s The Witcher game series has so far covered the life of Geralt of Rivia, only scratching the surface of what the universe has to offer. With Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, the developer plans to shed some light on areas of the game universe that have so far remained a mystery.

Thronebreaker is far from the main series of Witcher games, offering an aesthetic that is somewhat similar to The Banner Saga, while also offering combat mechanics that are based on the studio’s Gwent engine, offering a story-driven experience that is unlike anything else that we have seen in The Witcher franchise so far.

Until now, relatively little has been made known about Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, but the YouTube channel Entertanium has released a 24-minute video which showcases the opening areas of the game, including dialogue, exploration and combat. CD Project Red has stated that the Thronebreaker will offer 30 hours of gameplay, which will make this video very spoiler light within this game’s grand scale.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is described as a “grand adventure” that is full of quests, decisions and consequences, telling the story of Meve, the Warrior-Queen of the twin realms of Lyria and Rivia, lands that face an imminent invasion from the Nilfgaardian Empire. Within the game, players will explore a monster riddled medieval world, manage resourced and prepare for war using the game’s “battle camp” system, with story battles being carried out on  Gwent-like board.

The footage below has confirmed that Thronebreaker will offer players a “Story Mode”, where battles can be skipped, and a normal mode where the game plays normally. Story Mode, as the name suggests, is designed for players who want to experience the game’s story content without spending their time in within the game’s Gwent-like battle system.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales was initially created to be a single-player component for Gwent: The Witcher trading card game. Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is currently set to release on PC on October 23rd on GOG, with a PS4/Xbox One release on December 4th, making PC the title’s leading platform.

CD Projekt Red says that Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales with 30 hours of gameplay, with quests that are “crafted by the developers responsible for some of the most iconic moments in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt”, which should make for a compelling story for series veterans.

Thronebreaker, The Witcher Tales will retail for £23.39 on GOG.
