AMD has finally launched FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), the company’s open-source spatial upscaling technology for PCs and consoles. In short, what FSR delivers is enhanced performance levels, upscaling lower-resolution images to higher resolutions while aiming to deliver high levels of image quality. 

FSR isn’t traditional upscaling, where detail is lost during the upscaling process. FSR aims to maintain near-native levels of image quality, effectively giving users a free performance upgrade whenever possible. That said, FidelityFX Super Resolution has various quality modes, which will allow gamers to decide whether they want to sit on the performance or quality sides of the FSR spectrum. 

Open Source Upscaling

The beauty of AMD’s solution is that it is available to everyone. Sony and Microsoft can deliver FidelityFX Super Resolution to their console users, as can Nvidia on their PC hardware. AMD is not limiting their FidelityFX Super Resolution technology to their Radeon products, and neither are they limiting their technology to the PC gaming market. 

This factor alone ensures that AMD’s FidelityFX technology will receive widespread adoption amongst game developers, as the benefits of the technology span the PC and console gaming markets. Developers can implement this technology to benefit all of their players, not just a subset of the PC gaming market. This is an area where AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution feature succeeds where Nvidia’s DLSS fails. That said, DLSS is about selling Nvidia’s products, not about benefitting the gaming ecosystem as a whole.

Performance

AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution feature has four default quality modes, each of which utilises a different input resolution. Naturally, the lower the input resolution, the larger the performance gain. The lower the input resolution, the less information that FSR has to deliver high-quality image upscaling. 

In Ultra Quality mode, AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution feature delivers image quality levels that are “indistinguishable” from natively rendered images. In essence, Ultra Quality FidelityFX offers gamers a free performance boost. At least according to AMD. 

Below is a description of FSR’s quality modes; 

– “Ultra Quality” mode produces an image with quality virtually indistinguishable from native rendering with good performance. It should be selected when the highest FSR quality is desired.

– “Quality” mode produces an FSR image with the quality representative of native rendering while delivering great performance.

– “Balanced” mode produces an FSR image approximating native rendering quality and delivers exceptional performance for gamers.

– “Performance” mode visibly impacts image quality and should only be selected in situations where they need for the ultimate in performance is critical.

Starting today, FidlityFX Super Resolution is available in Godfall, Rift Breaker, 22 Racing Series, Anno 1800, Evil Genius 2, Kingshunt, and Terminator: Resistance.

In the future, AMD plans to deliver FidelityFX Super Resolution to sterigos, Baldur’s Gate 3, DOTA 2, Edge of Eternity, Far Cry 6, Farming Simulator 22, Forespoken, Myst, Necromunda: Hired Gun, Resident Evil Village, Swordsman Remake, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodhunt. 

Necromunda: Hired Gun already supports Nvidia’s DLSS feature, a factor that will allow PC gamers to compare DLSS and FSR directly. Now that’s an AMD VS Nvidia comparison that I want to see!

AMD has confirmed that 40 game developers plan to support FidelityFX Super Resolution, a fact that highlights that AMD’s technology is seen as an incredibly useful tool by the gaming industry. 

AMD plans to work with more developers to bring FSR to more games and wants PC gamers to tell them where they would like to see FSR. PC gamers can contact AMD here to suggest games. 

    FidelityFX Super Resolution is off to a great start with strong industry support from over 40 game developers, including ACME game studios, Counterplay Games, Capcom, Crystal Dynamics, Exor Studios, Electronic Arts, GIANTS Software, GOATi Entertainment, Illfonic, Larian Studios, Luminous Productions, Midgar Studios, Nixxes, Obsidian Entertainment, Perfect World Games, Rebellion, Teyon, Ubisoft, Unity, Vaki Games, Valve, and Warner Bros. Games.
