Avalanche Studios releases 20-minute gameplay demo for Just Cause 4

Square Enix and Avalanche Studios have released a 20-minute video which showcases Just Cause 4’s Gamescom 2018 build, revealing what appears to be steady framerates and a wide range of physics-based item interactions.

Avalanche Studios plans to make Just Cause 4 their largest and most feature-rich entry into the Just Cause series to date, offering players a vast 100 square kilometre world which boasts improved visuals and an overhauled game engine.

The latest iteration of the APEX engine, promises to deliver enhanced physics-based interactions, dynamic weather conditions and in-game destruction at higher framerates than before. In the Gamescom 2018 demo below, gameplay appeared smooth throughout, even when in heavy combat with a large number of explosions and physics interactions.

The series’ iconic grappling hook and attachments have received a major overhaul, allowing gamers to heavily customise their gaming experience, allowing gamers to attach balloons to a tank to create a hovering spectre of death while offering the ability to control Rico’s grappling hook items while inside vehicles. Avalanche wants to deliver gamers unparalleled levels of creative freedom.

Just Cause 3 proved to be quite a performance hog on both PCs and consoles, particularly in areas with lots of explosions, environmental destruction and other compute-intensive effects. With this in mind, Avalanche’s smooth Gamescom Demo is an encouraging sight.

Just Cause 4 is currently set to release on December 4th on PC, Xbox One and PS4, which means that the game’s enhanced graphical feature set is expected to run in the same hardware that already struggles with Just Cause 3. Let’s hope that Avalanche’s APEX engine has become more computationally efficient, as what’s the point of improved visuals if they come at the expense of stable performance.
