Battleborn has become a free-to-play game

Gearbox has officially released their new “Battleborn free trail”, which comes with no time limits or limited access to certain game modes. In reality, Battleborn has become a Free-To-Play game, allowing all PC gamers to download and play the game for free with a weekly rotation of six of the game’s 30 heroes.

Player progression and account progression will be permanent, so free-to-play players will not be at a disadvantage to paid players, aside from the fact that paid players will have access to all of the game’s heroes at all times.
Battleborn’s free trial is currently available to play on PC and Xbox One, with the trail releasing on PS4 on June 13th. PS4 and Xbox One players will require PS Plus and Xbox Live Gold Memberships to play online.

With in-game or premium currency free-to-play players will be able to unlock new heroes, cosmetic items, gear and access to story missions and season pass content. Those who upgrade to the paid version of the game will also receive in-game currency to account for any duplicate items.

Existing Battleborn players will also receive a “Founders Bonus” which will give them 1,000 Platinum and 50,000 Credits to spend how they wish in-game, as well as access to everything the original game provided from the start. “Founders” will also have access to legendary gears, additional free loot packs when they start playing the game.

There is no question that Battleborn is now a free to play game, making it strange that Gearbox is moving down this “Free Trial” angle instead of calling the game a free-to-play release.

Will becoming free-to-play finally make Battleborn a success?
