Activision has officially announced Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, confirming many of the rumours that have been floating around the title for the past few months. The game will feature a Battle Royale Mode, Zombies and a traditional multiplayer mode, remove features like wall running to give a “boots on the ground” experience and was showcased without a single player mode.

Here we will talk primarily about Black Ops 4’s upcoming PC release, which is currently due on the same day as its console counterparts on October 12th. Beenox will be handling the development of the title’s PC version, with plans to offer an uncapped framerate, 4K resolution support, HDR functionality and native multi-monitor/ultra-wide resolution capabilities.

Like all Black Ops series games, Black Ops 4 will feature dedicated servers on PC while also promising tweaks to weapon recoil for keyboard/mouse users. The game will also be exclusive to Battle.net, which means that Black Ops 4 will not release on Steam.

Activision Blizzard has been a single entity since 2008, when Activision acquired Blizzard software, though both brands have mostly remained separate for the most part until now. With the release of Destiny 2 on PC Blizzard opened up the floodgates for high-profile Activision games to release on PC through the Blizzard store, bypassing Steam and the fees associated with it.

Releasing on Battle.net is a purely economic decision from Activision Blizzard, as it allows the publisher to hold onto the revenue which would have previously gone to Valve, the owners of PC gaming’s largest platform holder, Steam. This change isn’t about the new community options that Battle.net can offer Call of Duty players; this is purely about increasing Activision Blizzard’s profit margins.

With Black Ops 4 Treyarch/Beenox promise to “focus on PC gaming as its own unique platform” and “give PC gamers what they deserve”. While this promise is positive, Call of Duty’s PC audience has been told the same word on a yearly basis from the franchise, leaving us to expect nothing more than the usual from Activision.

Let’s hope that this means that PC gamers will be getting something on par with, or better than Call of Duty: WWII’s PC version.
