Close to the Sun, the Bioshock-like horror game, will release this May

Closer to the Sun is a first-person horror game that takes more than a little inspiration from Bioshock, releasing from the developer Storm in a Teacup next month on PC.

Forget Rapture; this is Helios, a city-sized ship that’s deep in international water, the city where none other than Nikola Tesla calls the shots. Helios is designed to be a place of unrivalled research, where the world’s greatest minds can work independently of states and outside of the gaze of society, but progress at all costs has its downsides, as by the time players enter the city, they find a single word… quarantine.

Close to the Sun has been developed in partnership with Epic Game, accelerating the game’s development while allowing the team to take advantage of the graphical capabilities that are offered by Unreal Engine 4. Later this year, Close to the Sun will also release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

While the game carries a Bioshock-like setting, the game is not an FPS. Progress will be made by solving problems and survival, with players being expected to run and hide from danger, rather than firing enough shots to make the seaborne city sink.

It’s 1897. Deep in international waters, the Helios stands still. Dark clouds loom overhead as unforgiving waves crash against the hull. Colossal effigies of gold, decorated with magnificent finery, stretch as far as the eye can see.

Born of Nikola Tesla’s vision, the Helios serves as a haven for the greatest scientific minds. An unbound utopia for research, independent from state and isolated from the gaze of society. Free to push the boundaries of matter and time.

Journalist Rose Archer steps aboard the Helios in search of her sister Ada. She quickly discovers not all is as it seems. Grand halls stand empty. The stench of rotting flesh lingers in the air. Silence. A single word is painted across the entrance… QUARANTINE!

On PC, Close to the Sun will release as an Epic Games Store exclusive, which makes sense given the game’s use of Unreal Engine 4 and the game’s apparent partnership with Epic Games. A smaller game like this will have a lot more visibility on the Epic Games store than on Steam, and Epic’s promise of increased developer revenue shares is an offer that is too good for some studios to pass up.

When it comes to PC hardware, Close to the Sun should be fairly easy to users to modern systems to run, though at this time it looks like users of Radeon graphics cards are in for a treat, as this game’s PC system requirements are putting a Radeon RX 470 on level pegging with Nvidia’s GTX 1060.
