Last night Cloud Imperium Games hosted their Star Citizen Holiday Special, an event which showcased Squadron 42, the title’s standalone single player game, in great detail.  

During this event over an hour of Pre-Alpha gameplay for the title was shown, showcasing detailed voice acted sections, some spectacular graphics and both in-space and on-foot combat sections. This gameplay demo is only a small vertical slice of what will become eventually become Squadron 42, with the demo being available both with an without developer commentary on Star Citizen’s YouTube Channel.  

Chris Roberts stated that the game will be designed to run at 60FPSon high-end systems but will be able to function on lower-end hardware with a framerate of 30FPS. At this time a lot of optimisations for the title as still underway, with the game remaining in pre-alpha. At this time the final game has no firm release date. 

  

So far, Star Citizen has received over $174 million in player funding, with the release schedule being delayed time and time again to a point where the game’s developers are not even confident enough to reveal a ball-park release date for either Squadron 42 or the full Star Citizen MMO experience. 

What Cloud Imperium Games has shown here was impressive, though like all vertical slices it has the potential to be just as misleading as it was enlightening. We need only look at games like Watch Dogs to see exactly how early gameplay can differ from the game’s final release. Hopefully, Squadron 42 will offer exactly what is promised here, though from the looks of it this is going to take quite some time to accomplish.
