Dedicated FreeSync 2 support has been added to Far Cry 5

AMD and Ubisoft have teamed up to bring FreeSync 2 HDR support to Far Cry 5 thanks to a new game patch, allowing the game to look as close to the developer’s vision as possible.

Dedicated FreeSync 2 HDR support in games is designed to target the brightness, contrast and colour gamut properties of a display directly, allowing games to optimise themselves for the HDR displays that they are connected to.

This support is more than just enabling HDR support and FreeSync at the same time, with dedicated software FreeSync 2 support allowing games to offer the best HDR experience that a FreeSync 2 display can provide.

FreeSync 2 software support eliminates one of the major issues with HDR gaming, as developers typically tailor their HDR content to a particular display or a set brightness specification, giving users of lower-end HDR monitors a sub-par experience. Dedicated FreeSync 2 software support allows games to directly target the specifications of a FreeSync 2 display to offer the best HDR experience, though at this time the mechanisms behind this are unknown.

We already know that FreeSync monitors can communicate their FreeSync range to supported PCs, allowing Variable refresh rate technologies to function. FreeSync 2 displays may also be able to transfer information like contrast ratio, maximum brightness and colour gamut support, which could allow games to optimise their video output to match the player’s monitor.

At this time we do not know how this technology works, though we have requested that AMD provides us with more detailed information.
