Epic Games acquires Cubic Motion to improve its facial animation tech

Epic Games has announced that they have acquired Cubic Motion, a long-term technology partner who are world leaders in the field of facial animation. Through this acquisition, Epic Games plans to continue to deliver cutting-edge visuals with its Unreal technologies, pushing forward what’s possible with real-time graphics.

The video below showcases the combined efforts of Epic Games, 3Lateral (who were acquired by Epic Games in January 2019) and Cubic Motion, highlighting the possibilities that digital human technologies offer within the world of 3D graphics. The video below is from GDC 2018.

Cubic Motion’s technology has been used to create games such as Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man. Cubic Motion is set to work closely with 3Lateral to develop “innovative technologies that enable digitization of human appearance and motion at unprecedented levels of realism.”

Cubic Motion is a UK-based company that’s based in Manchester, and at this time, Epic Games has not announced how much they paid to acquire Cubic Motion.

When speaking about the acquisition, Tim Sweeney, the Founder of Epic Games, has this to say; “Digital humans are not only the next frontier of content creation, but also the most complex endeavour in computer graphics. With Cubic Motion bringing their computer vision and animation technology and expertise to our digital human efforts, Epic along with our team at 3Lateral are one step closer to democratizing these capabilities for creators everywhere.”
