GDC 2020 has been postponed due to Coronavirus concerns

As Coronavirus spreads to more nations, concerns surrounding Covid-19 has only continued to grow, causing companies and their employees to bail on planned public events in fear of the contagion.

GDC has been hit hard by these concerns, with Sony, Facebook, Microsoft, Epic Games and others cancelling their appearances due to the potential health risks. While GDC 2020 promised more robust safety measures than prior years, these precautions proved inadequate for exhibitors and attendees alike. As such, GDC 2020 has been postponed.

Let’s be clear, GDC, as it was, has been cancelled. A new GDC is currently in the planning stages, with the CPM Game Group, the organisers of the event, confirming that they “fully intend to host a GDC event later in the summer.”

Those who purchased passes for GDC 2020 will all be issued refunds, though the costs of hotels and flights may not be reimbursed by airlines and hotel operators.

Pax East is now underway in Boston, and it is missing the attendance of Sony, Capcom, Square Enix, PUBG Corp, CD Projekt Red, and others due to the virus. Other events like CCP Games’ EVE FanFest 2020 have also been cancelled. At this time, it is unknown how future events like E3 and Computex 2020 will be impacted.
