Gearbox Hints at Borderlands 3 Reveal This Month

Rumours regarding Borderlands 3 have been circulating for quite some time, with reports of the titles imminent reveal dating from as far back as last year, where an E3 2018 reveal was expected.

E3 2018 came and gone without a single hint of Borderlands 3, but now it looks like an official reveal is finally on the cards, with Gearbox releasing a teaser image which lists March 28th as a potential reveal date. This date also lines up with PAX East, a gaming event which takes place on March 28th in the US city of Boston.

Borderlands 2 released in 2012, launching on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel launching in 2014. Both games later released on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 as part of the Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, but so far the series has not received a new release on current-generation platforms.

Borderlands 3 is expected to offer an enormous graphical upgrade over its predecessors, thanks to the power of modern console hardware and advancements in game development techniques. The game is expected to maintain the series’ signature cell shaded style and offer similar FPS gameplay.

At this time Borderlands 3 is expected to make use of Unreal Engine 4, with Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford showcasing the engine at GDC 2017 to demonstrate the technology behind “the next Borderlands game”. The game’s development may have taken some major turns since 2017, but we feel it is unlikely that the game would receive an engine change.
