Gears of War 5 was ‘built from the ground up for PC’

In a recent interview with Wired, The Coalition’s Rod Fergusson discussed Gears of War 5 in detail, confirming already known facts like how the game targets a framerate of 60FPS at 4K on Xbox One X and that the game will have a simultaneous Windows 10 and Xbox One release.

During this interview, Fergusson stated that the game is “built from the ground up” for PC, taking advantage of all of the optimisation options that PC has to offer. Gears of War 4 ran exceptionally well when it launched in 2016, delivering one of PC gaming’s best implementation of DirectX 12 support to date, something that The Coalition wishes to improve upon further.

Early builds of Gears of War 5 are already able to hit framerates of 120FPS, which is a good sign for PC gaming’s framerate junkies. On PC Gears of War 4 offered options for Async Compute, Variable resolutions and other high-end gaming features, with Gears of War 5 promising to add HDR into the mix. At this time it is unknown whether or not The Coalition plans to make use of other PC specific features like Radeon’s Rapid Packed Math, though it seems likely that the game will be DirectX 12 exclusive on the platform.

Having a game that we’re building from the ground up for PC [means players] will be able to take advantage of all the types of different PC optimisation options you can have,

You’ll be able to max it to quite high. It’s still reasonably early, but we can usually get to 120fps. It’s obviously going to matter what hardware you’re using to get that – but it’ll be able to scale up that high, [if] the hardware can push it.

Assuming that PC gamers have the hardware to back them up, Gear of War 5 should scale well beyond what the game’s Xbox One X counterpart will be capable of, perhaps allowing for a no-compromises 4k 60FPS experience or maybe something greater. Will higher framerates and resolutions be possible for 2019’s high-end PC hardware?
