Lucasfilm Games has been Resurrected – Entering A New Era of Star Wars Games

Disney and  Lucasfilm have announced that they have resurrected Lucasfilm Games, a new brand which will become the new home for all games related to Lucasfilm franchises, including Star Wars.

Lucasfilm Games aims to work “in collaboration with the finest studios across the industry”, a clear sign that Disney’s Star Wars licensing deal with EA may be coming to an end. In 2013, EA cut a deal with Disney to become the exclusive publisher of Star Wars games for ten years. That deal is due to expire in 2023, and the revival of Lucasfilm Games has made it clear that Disney will not be renewing this partnership.

Lucasfilm’s mention of “studios across the industry” is a clear sign that Disney plans to work with developers outside of the EA umbrella. This will allow Lucasfilm to have more control of the Star Wars brand within the gaming landscape, which could lead to more new Star Wars games. EA squandered most of their 10-year exclusivity period with the Star Wars franchise, and Disney should not let that happen again. That said, we should expect ore Star Wars content from EA, given the popularity of Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Squadrons.

The first title under the Lucasfilm Games banner will be Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, which is due to release this Spring.

Lucasfilm’s legacy in gaming stretches back decades. And with Lucasfilm and the galaxy far, far away entering a new and unprecedented phase of creativity, so will the world of Lucasfilm Games — developed in collaboration with the finest studios across the industry.

StarWars.com is thrilled to reveal that Lucasfilm Games is now the official identity for all gaming titles from Lucasfilm, a name that encompasses the company’s rich catalog of video games and its eye toward the future. To mark this new era, Lucasfilm Games has launched social channels on Twitter (@LucasfilmGames) and Facebook (@LucasfilmGames), which will deliver breaking news and more directly to fans.
