Microsoft renames Beam to Mixer – announces new features

Beam has now been officially renamed by Microsoft, allowing the service to be extended to territories where the Beam name cannot be used. Alongside this announcement, Microsoft has also announced several new features for Beam, which includes collaborative streaming features and extensions of their interactive streaming functions.

The theme of this new announcement is bringing people together, making it the perfect time to launch their beta Mixer app for Android and iOS, allowing Mixer/Beam to be viewed in more places than before, catching up to their more established competitor Twitch.  Mixer is looking to expand into additional platforms in the future, but the company was not willing to make any firm announcements.

One of Mixer/Beam’s key new feature is “co-streaming”, which allows viewers to watch multiple streams of the same multiplayer game in a single window. This will allow viewers to more easily watch collaborative streams, where multiple streamers play the same game together like a multi-player Minecraft project or team games like DOTA 2 or H1Z1- King of the Hill.

Mixer’s biggest selling point is low-latency streaming, which allows for a lot of streamer-to-viewer interaction, with several Telltale games going so far as to allow stream viewers to vote on the outcomes of in-game choices in games like The Walking Dead, Guardians of the Galaxy and Batman.
