Modders allow PC gamers to finish Half-Life: Alyx without a headset

Half-Life Alyx hasn’t been out for a month, and already, game modders have been able not just to get the game playing without a VR headset, but have allowed PC gamers to play through the entire game without a VR headset.

This full game playability comes thanks to the game modder r57zone, who has released a mod on GITHUB which allows other modders to analyse his code and makes his tool available to download for free. The modder has also released a seven-minute-long game video which showcases non-VR footage of Half-Life: Alyx.

With this mod, Half-Life: Alyx can be controlled using a mouse/keyboard setup, with key bindings for the game being available on GITHUB. These controls are far from intuitive, as should be expected from a VR-only game that has been converted to mouse/keyboard. This game’s movement to too free-flowing to enable simple keybindings.

As you can see from the video below, the movement within Half-Life: Alyx Non-VR is clunky at best, but at least the game is playable. Perhaps more refined versions of this mod will arrive in the future, but nobody should expect this game to ever play like a normal non-VR game. There’s a reason why this game shipped as a VR-only title after all.

PC Gamers can now download Half-Life: Alyx’s no VR mod on GITHUB.
