Bethesda has confirmed that Rage 2 will be a single player game, discarding the co-op and other multiplayer modes that were available in the original to focus on the title’s solo-play elements.

Rage 2 is being co-developed by id software and Avalanche Software, two of the biggest names in the FPS and Open-World genres respectively, making them the ideal studios to bring Rage 2 onto modern PC and console hardware.

The game is built on an enhanced version of Avalanche’s APEX Engine; the engine used to create Just Cause 3, a game which ran at 30FPS on consoles with frequent dips in areas with a lot of on-screen action.

id Software is famous for squeezing cutting-edge visuals and smooth framerates out of low-end hardware, with DOOM (2016) acting as a modern marvel for console development. High framerates make fast-paced gunplay feel smoother, making a steady 60FPS a must for most PC gamers in FPS titles.

Rage 2 will target 60FPS gameplay, but only on high-end consoles like the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro, both of which offer significant boosts in CPU and GPU performance over their lower-end counterparts. Both the PS4 and Xbox One will target 30FPS, which points towards the gaming being more CPU limited than GPU limited on these platforms.

When looking at previous APEX engine games, it is astounding that Avalanche and id software can offer 60FPS gameplay on any console, showcasing how far the APEX engine has come since the release of Just Cause 3.

PC gamers have access to CPUs that are a lot more powerful than their console counterparts, which should make it a lot easier to run the game at higher framerates on the platform, provided players have strong enough GPUs to keep up. Let’s hope that the modern APEX Engine offers support for the Vulkan Graphics API, an API that is already used in recent id tech 6 games like DOOM (2016) and Wolfenstein: The New Colossus.
