Steam Digital Gift Cards are now available online

Steam gift cards have been available at retailers for some time, allowing people to give Steam wallet funds to the PC gamer in their life. Before now these codes were exclusive to physical gift cards, which meant that they needed to be purchased in-store or shipped from an online retailer, making it tricky to send Steam gift cards/credit across countries or large distances.

Valve has now added Steam Gift cards to their online storefront, allowing PC gamers to purchase £4, £10, £25, £50 and £100 gift cards that can be sent directly to the Steam wallets of anyone on your friends list. Buyers will also be able to send a personalised message with their gift card, which if very similar to how game gifting works on the platform.

This new system helps to avoid that awkward moment when you buy a game for a friend that they either already own or have no interest in, allowing your friend to spend their gift card currency on whatever they wish.

Steam gift cards can only be sent to people who have been your friend for a minimum of three days on Steam, and Steam wallet funds cannot be used to purchase gift cards. If the person who is sent the gift card does not want it, the sender can be fully refunded, if possible using their chosen payment type or directly to their Steam wallet.

When sending Steam Gift cards across countries, the amount on the gift card will be converted to the recipient’s regional currency, so a gift card in USD ($) will be converted to GBP (£) if transferred to a user in the UK.
