Telltale will reportedly ditch their game engine after “Telltale fatigue” sets in

With the release of The Walking Dead in 2012, Telltale was quickly propelled into success, eventually bringing the series to every major console and handheld platform of that era.

At the time a lot of players loved the series’ graphics, which did a great job simulating a hand-drawn aesthetic, a fitting art style given The Walking Dead’s source material. In time this success would spawn several sequels, including similar choose-your-own-adventure games for famous franchises such as Batman, Guardians of the Galaxy, Game of Thrones, The Wolf Among Us and even Minecraft.

While Telltale’s in-house Telltale Tool Engine has received some upgrades over time, they have never been enough to satisfy the studio’s fanbase, creating what many have termed “Telltale Fatigue”. Fans of the studio were getting sick of seeing the same gameplay mechanics over and over with different franchises, with the engine limiting the developers in ways outside of graphics.

A report from Variety has claimed that Telltale plans to abandon their in-house engine in favour of Unity for future projects, providing the developer with a baseline that is easier to modify and mould to suit future projects. The Walking Dead: The Final Season is said to be the last game to use Telltale’s current game engine.

Telltale’s latest games have not received as much attention as their predecessors, partially due to the perceived stagnation in Telltale’s technology and limited gameplay variety. Hopefully, Telltale’s move to a new engine will allow the developer to innovate with their future game series’, such as the Wolf Among Us 2 and their upcoming Stranger Things project.
