The Firefox Quantum Browser has now launched

Today marks the launch of Mozilla Firefox version 57, the first mainstream release of Firefox Quantum. This new version of Firefox offers users increased levels of browser performance, adding new functionality while also making better use of CPU, GPU and memory resources to conserve battery life and allow more computational resources to be used for other applications. 

Firefox Quantum is a newly rewritten version of Firefox that is designed with parallelism in mind, making the browser more efficient when using multi-core systems. Mozilla also has plans to introduce new forms of GPU acceleration in the future, with hopes of increasing their browser’s efficiency and speed further. 

Mozilla claims that this new browser offers a 2x increase in browsing speed than Firefox 52 (Using the Speedometer 2.0 benchmark), while also decreasing the browser’s memory usage. This is great news for those who are using older systems to browse the web, particularly those with lower amounts of system memory.

In Mozilla’s own testing they found that Firefox Quantum was able to use 30% less RAM than Chrome when using the atsy project (GitHub), which consists of 30 open tabs. This is a huge resource saving, making Firefox much more appealing for those with lower-end systems.
