Toshiba announces their BG series of M.2 and BGA NVMe SSDs

At CES 2017, Toshiba has showcased their new BG series of M.2 and BGA NVMe SSDs, offering capacities of up to 512GB in a package that is 16mm x 20mm.

This new SSD will be using Toshiba’s own TLC 3D BiCS stacked flash memory, with an SSD controller that is integrated onto the same package. The form factor of this SSD is 82% smaller than a standard Type 22806 M.2 SSD and 95% smaller than a standard SATA SSD.

BG-series will use a PCIe Gen3 x2 interface and is designed to be directly soldered onto the motherboard of a product, making this device well suited for ultrathin mobile PCs and 2-in-1 convertible tablet PCs. This SSD comes in a 16mm x 20mm BGA package, but also comes in a M.2 Type 2230 (Short M.2) form factor.

This SSD uses an in-house Toshiba built controller and firmware, as well as Toshiba’s newest BiCS 3D NAND which will allow this SSD to offer greater performance, increased reliability and increased capacities over a similarly sized SSD using traditional NAND.

Toshiba’s BG series of SSDs will be available in 128GB, 256Gb and 512GB capacities in BGA packages and in removable M.2 2230 modules. Samples of this SSD are already available to some OEMs, with products using this SSD shipping in 2017.
