Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia is set to release in 2018, delivering a more focused Total War experience that covers a relatively short period of history. Thrones of Britannia starts in 878 AD, a time before the Norman conquest of England where King Alfred “The Great” of Wessex was earning his title.

Creative Assembly has now revealed the campaign map for Thrones of Britannia, the most detailed map of the British Isles that has ever been seen in a Total War title. This map is 23x larger than the British Isles section of Total War: Attila’s campaign map, showcasing how much detail is on the map of a Total War Saga campaign.

Below is an image which showcases the starting factions in Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia, using the traditional names of both factions and areas, though note that some factions have been split up to prevent certain factions from starting with an overwhelming advantage.

For example, West Seaxe controlled most of the South of England, forcing CA to split the faction into territories that were known to be under the control of an Ealdorman. These factions are vassals at the start of the game but could break away in time as the game progresses, presenting an excellent opportunity for campaign variety when replaying the game.

Creative Assembly created this map as accurately as they could given the information that was available to them, though sadly some of the histories of these regions has been lost to time. The North of England and Scotland both have no existing historical annals from this era, leading CA to seek the help of historians to create a “historically authentic” interpretation of these regions.

When the full game releases ten playable factions will be available, covering factions in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Like Total War: Warhammer and Attila, each region will have multiple settlements, though the buildings outside of a provincial capital will be pre-defined to suit the characteristics of an area.
