Windows 7 will lose extended support in less than a year

Every Windows OS has a life cycle, and that cycle is coming to an end for Windows 7, which now has less than a year’s worth of extended support remaining.

After this time if over, Windows 7 will no longer be updated, leaving the OS open to exploitation once any new security holes are uncovered for the platform. Mainstream support for Windows 7 ended on January 13th 2015, but on January 14th 2020, extended support will be ended, officially retiring the OS. 

This means that security conscious Windows users will need to move to Windows 10, which currently receives major updates twice a year alongside smaller updates that are delivered on a monthly basis. At this time Windows 10 has no end date for official support, as Microsoft currently has no plans to replace Windows 10 with a new operating system. Each Windows 10 feature update will be supported for 18 months, after which users will be forced to upgrade to the OS’ latest version to receive continued support.
