Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus will support FP16 Rapid Packed Math

 

id Software has confirmed that Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus will support DirectX 12/Vulkan, Async Compute, Shader Intrinsics and Rapid Packed Math, making it of the most advanced games to date on a technical level. 

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus will be based on id Tech 6, the same engine that powered DOOM (2016), with new features that are only now arriving on modern GPU and console hardware. The most interesting addition to id Tech 6 is Rapid Packed Math, which will allow certain graphical aspects of the game to be rendered using FP16 compute rather than standard FP32 compute, allowing these tasks to be completed up to 2x faster than before, freeing up compute resources for other tasks.   

Right now “Rapid Packed Math” is only supported on AMD’s Vega GPU architecture on PC, though the feature is already available on Sony’s PS4 Pro console.

With a release date of October 27th, Wolfenstein II will be the first PC game to support Rapid Packed Math, which will likely give AMD’s Vega GPUs a significant performance advantage over their Nvidia counterparts, though at this time it is unknown how many tasks can be completed using FP16 compute.
