Kingston releases entry-level A1000 NVMe SSD – Promises near SATA pricing

NVMe is set to become a lot more mainstream in 2018 as manufacturers scramble to create mid-tier solutions which can surpass the performance levels of SATA while maintaining a low price point. 

Kingston is hoping to take advantage of the demand for affordable NVMe SSDs with their new A1000 series, which offers capacities of 240GB, 480GB and 960GB with “near SATA” pricing while providing a 2x boost in sequential performance. 

All models in the A1000 lineup offer sequential read speeds of 1,500MB/s with the 240GB, 480GB and 960GB models providing sequential write speeds of 800MB/s, 900MB/s and 1,000MB/s respectively. All of these M.2 SSDs will ship in a single-sided 2280 M.2 form factor, which could potentially allow a 2TB version to be created in the future if Kingston decides to make a double-sided variant.

These A1000 SSDs utilise Phison’s 5008 controllers, making use of 3D TLC NAND. Each model in Kingston’s A1000 range has a limited 5-year warranty with a Total Bytes Written (TBW) rating of 150TB for the 240GB version, 300TB for the 480GB version and 600TB for the 960GB version.

Kingston aims to deliver up a 2x performance boost over SATA with a minimal increase in pricing using a PCIe 3.0 2x interface, delivering a value-oriented middle point between SATA and High-End NVMe SSD offerings. 

Update – Kingston has provided us with official pricing for their new A1000 series SSDs. Pricing-wise, these SSDs sit between Samsung’s 860 Evo and Pro series of SSDs, while promising faster read/write speeds than both.
