Samsung Reveals an 8TB M.2 NF1 NVMe SSD for Data Centers

Samsung has officially revealed their largest M.2 SSD to date, offering 8TB of storage capacity with 3D V-NAND modules that stack 16 256Gb TLC NAND chips to provide 512GB of storage capacity each. Every NAND chip on this SSD has half a TB of storage capacity.  

To achieve this monumental storage feat, Samsung uses their Next-generation Small Form Factor (NGSFF) form factor, which has dimensions of 110mm by 305mm to provide SSD makers enough PCB space to deliver advanced features like power loss protection and a 2x increase in storage capacity. 

Samsung’s new NF1 NVMe SSD uses both sides of the SSD to pack a total of 16 NAND chips onto its PCB and has a controller which supports both the PCIe 3.0 and 4.) interfaces and can provide sequential transfer speeds of up to 3,100MB/s read and 2,000MB/s write. Samsung has also added 12GB of DRAM to their NF1 SSD to act as a cache to accelerate the SSD and increase its power efficiency.  

In total, Samsung expects customers to be able to fit up to 72 of these drives into a single 2U rack server, providing users with up to 576TB of storage space. The NF1’s small form factor allows Samsung to offer higher storage densities and performance than an equivalent server with high capacity SATA-based solid state drives.

Samsung has also revealed plans to create another version of their NF1 series SSD with 512Gb 3-bit V-NAND modules, which promise to deliver enhanced performance and perhaps higher storage densities. Samsung has rated their NF1 SSD with a three-year warranty with an endurance level of 1.3 drive writes per day (DWPD), which is the equivalent of 10.4 TB of writes every day or around 11.4 Petabytes throughout the drive’s warranty period.
