Microsoft has officially brought 1440p resolution and FreeSync support to Xbox One

With their Xbox One X console, Microsoft has been pushing to offer more features than any of their competitors, providing Xbox (Original) and Xbox 360 emulation/backwards compatibility, Discord integration and now enhanced display support.

In their latest Xbox One firmware update, Microsoft has added support for 1440p displays, Variable Refresh Rates (VRR) through Radeon FreeSync and support for Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). With these features, Microsoft has delivered support for a large number of PC-oriented high-resolution displays, while also providing users with a smoother gaming experience by adding support for VRR.

To start off, ALLM is an HDMI 2.1 feature which will allow consoles and other devices to tell supported televisions and displays to enable their low latency “game mode” to provide minimal input latency. This feature will make games feel more responsive on compatible displays and minimise the amount of time that gamers need to adjust their TV’s settings. ALLM is an HDMI 2.1 feature and can function on HDMI 2.0, either as a firmware update for some existing televisions or as a feature in future upcoming TVs.

1440p resolution support will allow the Xbox One to play better on some PC monitors, displays which are popular amongst high-end PC users and streamers. Xbox One X can downsample the 4K output of the console down to 1440p, allowing 1440p users to get the full benefit of the Xbox One X’s power. 1440p is also a popular resolution for Radeon FreeSync displays, making the feature a lot more accessible.

The most innovative feature added by this update is support for Radeon FeeeSync, which can facilitate a tear-free gaming experience when a game’s framerates can align with a display’s variable refresh rate range. Standard televisions operate at 60Hz, allowing games to run at 30 or 60 Hz/FPS without a display/framerate mismatch to offer a tear/jitter-free gaming experience.

Variable Refresh Rate technology forces displays only to show new frames when a supported PC or console is ready, preventing display/frame mismatches to offer a smoother visual experience at a wider range of framerates.

Gamers will also enjoy the newly introduced support for variable refresh rate output to AMD Radeon FreeSync and FreeSync 2 compatible displays. AMD Radeon FreeSync is a form of variable refresh rate which helps to reduce input latency and minimize display stuttering, delivering a buttery-smooth visual gameplay experience in your favorite games. The entire Xbox One family of devices will work with FreeSync-certified displays. Xbox One S and Xbox One X will also support high dynamic range with AMD Radeon FreeSync 2.
