Nintendo are set to double Switch production

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Nintendo is now preparing to double the production of their Switch console to offset the recent demand for the system.

Nintendo has already reportedly sold over 1.5 million Nintendo Switch consoles, with most retailers listing the console as “out of stock”, marking obvious demand for the console. Many resellers have already increased the price of the console above Nintendo’s MSRP, leaving many consumers with the choice between inflated prices or a long wait for new stock to arrive in retail stores.

Now Nintendo is reportedly planning to produce 16 million Switch consoles by the end of March 2018, which is a huge number considering the Wii U’s lifetime sales of just above 10 million units.

If the Nintendo Switch can keep up with market demand and continue to release popular first party and 3rd party titles, the console will outsell the Wii U. The Nintendo Wii sold over 20 million units in its first year, though it seems that Nintendo is not expecting such high demand for the Switch, giving their production target of 18 million in the first year of the console’s lifespan.
