Razer has entered the mobile market with a £699 “Gaming” Smartphone

After what feels like an eternity of speculation Razer has finally revealed their first smartphone, delivering a powerful processor, some beefy specifications and a design that lacks RGB illumination (thank goodness).

Razer’s new smartphone is simply called the Razer Phone, a simple name for a device that sits amongst the elite in terms of system specs, delivering a 5.7-inch 1440p IGZO display, which offers a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz, 8GB of LPDDR4 memory running at 1833MHz a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and support for Dolby ATMOS sound.

This new phone will cost £699 in the UK and $699 in the US, coming with a 4,000mAh battery that promises “all-day-power”, with the device featuring a “game-booster” to offer a powerful gaming experience when required.

Razer has created this phone to offer a “best-in-class” thermal design to ensure that this device remains cool under load and produce minimal thermal throttling to maximise the performance of their device.

Looking at the device we can also see that the phone’s buttons are all placed in the middle of the device, making the phone perfect for landscape use, which is ideal for gaming and video viewing/streaming. The device also comes with 64GB of UFS storage built-in, with the device also supporting microSD devices that max out at 2TB.

The phone itself will ship with Android 7.1.1, Nougat, though the device will be updated to Oreo in Q1 2018. The device also ships with the Nova Launcher (Prime) Pre-installed, offering users a popular/familiar launcher at stock.

In the UK this device can either be purchased from Razer directly as an unlocked device or it can be purchased on contract with Three. Sadly this device will not ship with a 3.5mm jack, though Razer has included a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter, which Razer claims is certified by THX and come with a built-in DAC to offer great audio performance.

The external shell of this phone is made from blackened Aluminium, which has been designed to closely match the finish of the company’s Razer Blade notebook.

One of the most interesting features of this phone is the display’s UltraMotion technology, which is said to allow the phone’s refresh rate to be dynamically adjusted, allowing games to run at up to 120Hz and scale back to more suitable refresh rates for other content. Right now it is unknown exactly how versatile this technology is, as it does sound a lot like FreeSync/G-Sync on a mobile phone.
