Samsung reveals new Galaxy Book S Notebook – More Windows on ARM

Samsung has unveiled a new ultralight notebook, packing a design which aims to deliver a long battery life and, constant internet connectivity and a compact form factor that suitable for frequent travel.

To achieve this goal, Samsung hasn’t opted for a low-power Intel or AMD processor. x86 isn’t even a consideration here. No, this Windows laptop is powered by a 7nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx processor, delivering 40% more CPU performance, 80% more graphics performance and more memory bandwidth than the company’s Galaxy Book 2.

With this design, Samsung delivers LTE connectivity, fanless cooling and a large enough battery to offer up to 23 hours of continuous video playback. Not bad for such a compact design.

Below are the specifications of the Galaxy Book S. Samsung’s Galaxy Book S is due to release in the US for $999 this fall in pink and grey colour options.

Display: 13.3’’ FHD TFT (16:9) Touch: 10-point multi-touch screen
Screen Resolution: 1080p
Dimensions: 305.2 x 203.2 x 6.2-11.8 mm, 0.96 kg
Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx, 7nm 64-bit Octa-core processor (Max. 2.84 GHz 1.8GHz)
RAM: Memory 8GB RAM (LPDDR4X),
Storage: 256 / 512GB microSD slot (up to 1TB)
Camera: 720p HD
Battery: 42Wh, up to 23 hours video playback
Other features: Gigabit LTE, Bluetooth 5.0, fingerprint sensor, Dolby Atmos, Windows Hello support

While Windows on ARM can offer some fantastic feats in terms of battery life, the main downside of this notebook is the limited software compatibility of Windows on ARM devices. The simple fact of the matter is that x86 is more versatile, and the high $999 price tag of this unit will undoubtedly act as a significant turn off for potential users.
