Look ma, no fans! – YPlasma is bringing noiseless plasma-cooled laptops to CES 2026

YPlasma’s giving laptops a fan-free future with its Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) tech

YPlasma is coming to CES 2026 and plans to showcase a technology that could make all future laptops virtually silent. YPlasma is eliminating cooling fans and replacing them with Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma actuators, bringing space-grade technology to consumer devices.

By using cold plasma, Yplasma’s solid-state cooling technology can generate high-velocity “ionic wind”, pushing air without any moving parts. Operating at 17 dBA, Yplasma’s tech is almost noiseless. Regardless, it is powerful enough to cool high-performance laptops while taking up less space than a traditional fan.

While this style of cooling solution is not new, prior attempts at this technology have had issues. For starters, “corona discharge” devices tend to produce ozone, a harmful byproduct. Additionally, tip erosion can be a problem, acting as a primary failure point for these devices. YPlasma’s tech eliminates these issues with ozone-free operation and increased longevity. Yplasma’s protected electrode design is said to last the entire lifespan of laptop devices, though the company has not stated an exact lifespan expectation.

A blessing for future ultra-thin devices?

YPlasma claims that their technology is packaged in a 200-micron film, allowing this “space-grade” technology to be used everywhere. For laptops, this could enable thinner devices and new heatsink designs. Furthermore, this technology is versatile enough to be used across a broad range of industries. While silent laptop cooling is an excellent use case, it isn’t the only place where quiet air movement is desirable.
