At CES 2017 AMD has announced that their entire Ryzen CPU lineup will feature an unlocked multiplier, making all AMD Ryzen processors overclockable.

In addition to this AMD will also be releasing several overclocking ready motherboard chipsets, with the companies X370, B350 and X300 series chipsets all featuring overclocking capabilities. This will allow AMD users to overclock Ryzen CPUs at a wide range of potential price points, be it with a lower-end motherboard and with a Quad-core Ryzen CPU or AMD's flagship Ryzen 8-core model with an enthusiast-grade motherboard.

AMD has also revealed that the company will be releasing a range of Ryzen CPUs at launch, with various core-counts can clock and stock speeds.

This news is in huge contrast to Intel who typically locks overclocking behind expensive K-series SKUs and Z/X-series motherboard chipsets, making overclocking an enthusiast only affair.

the more i see this from amd and their willingness to adopt, invent and share open source tech, the more i want to support them with my next build. Shots fired, and rightfully so.Quote

That's insane money. Intel charging more to overclock has always been a tactic I strongly disagree with. That's also the same price as the new i5s. What the hell intel?Quote

the only thing is not every AMD motherboard will allow overclocking. so same thing but a little diffrent. locking the OC option behind the more expencive motherboards.Quote

Its not really the same thing. Motherboards are limited because some would simply not be capable of overlooking. Intel locks CPUs that would be perfectly capable just to grab a little more money.Quote
