AMD 400-series motherboards appear at PCI-SIG

Will 400-series motherboards offer many improvements over their 300-series counterparts?

We all know that AMD has plans to release a Ryzen Refresh, a new series of processors that will come on GlobalFoundries' new 12nm manufacturing process and come with several design improvements over AMD's existing Ryzen series products. While these new products are not expected to be AMD's next mayor architectural leap, Zen 2, this refresh is still expected to offer some meaningful benefits over their 1st generation of Zen products.

While AMD's Ryzen refresh is expected to work on existing 300-series AM4 motherboards, the company are also set to deliver new 400-series chipsets, though at this time it is unknown exactly what kind of improvements AMD plans to offer on their latest consumer chipset.

Now AMD's 400-series Promontary chipset has now appeared on PCI-SIG's Integrators list, confirming the existence of AMD's next generation of AM4 motherboards.

Recent rumours suggest that AMD's Ryzen Refresh series processors will deliver improved clock speeds over their Ryzen counterparts and deliver enhanced memory support to utilise higher speed DDR4 memory.

In many ways this makes AMD's Ryzen refresh seem similar to Kaby Lake, delivering higher levels of single-threaded performance and support for high-speed memory while offering more performance per watt than the company's previous generation of products. Only time will tell if these rumours are true.

PCI-SIG publishing a listing for a new Motherboard with PCIe3 ? ? ? PCI-SIG is about advancing PCIe. They are about PCIe 4 and PCIe 5. This looks like disinformation to me.Quote

The PCI 4.0 standard was officially published in late October. Do you seriously think AMD would be able to create a CPU and motherboard platform that supports it within such a short space of time?

Yes, PCI-SIG wants to advance PCIe, but that does not mean that they won't certify new platforms that use existing standards. PCI-SIG does not abandon their existing standards as soon as they are replaced.

It is unlikely that we will see products based on PCIe 4.0 anytime soon, at least until 2019.Quote
