AMD issues a statement in response to Ryzen 7000 CPU burnout reports

AMD releases official statement following reported Ryzen CPU burnouts

In recent weeks there have been several reports of Ryzen 7000 CPU failures, specifically affecting users of AMD’s new 3D V-Cache enhanced Ryzen 7000X3D processors. Right now, motherboard manufactures appear to be releasing new motherboard UEFI/BIOS updates to address these concerns, and AMD has not released a statement to Anandtech discussing the issue. 

Based on AMD’s statements, it looks like some motherboards may be providing unsafe voltages to AMD Ryzen 7000 processors, resulting in damage to their AM5 CPU socket and the connected pin pads of AMD’s Ryzen 7000 series processors. AMD has claimed that they are investigating the situation with their ODM partners, and that they are working to ensure that sae voltages are provided to their processors.  

Below is AMD’s statement to Anandtech;

    We are aware of a limited number of reports online claiming that excess voltage while overclocking may have damaged the motherboard socket and pin pads. We are actively investigating the situation and are working with our ODM partners to ensure voltages applied to Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs via motherboard BIOS settings are within product specifications. Anyone whose CPU may have been impacted by this issue should contact AMD customer support.

Based on AMD’s statements, it sounds like some motherboards are delivering voltages to Ryzen 7000 series processors that are too high, and other reports have claimed that performance tuning though Precision Boost 2 and EXPO memory overclocking on AM5 motherboards are responsible for these overvoltage issues and CPU failures.

AMD and their motherboard partners are reportedly working on new limits and rules that will prevent these issues in the future. These new rules and limits will be delivered though motherboard BIOS/UEFI updates.
