ASUS launches its Prime TRX40-PRO S motherboard with beefed-up power circuitry
What must be noted here is that all of ASUS’ original TRX40 motherboards are more than good enough to support AMD’s flagship Ryzen Threadripper 3990X processor, even when overclocked, but that doesn’t mean that improvements can’t be made.Â
ASUS has already updated its ROG Strix TRX40-E Gaming to create their newÂ ROG Strix TRX40-XE GamingÂ model, and their ROG Zenith II Extreme to create their ROG Zenith II Extreme Alpha.Â Now, its time for the ASUS Prime TRX40-PRO to be upgraded.Â
Meet the Prime TRX40-PRO S, a new motherboard design for AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper 3000 series of processors. This new motherboard model offers seemingly identical specifications to ASUS’ existing Prime TRX40-PRO. with the only major difference beingÂ ASUS’ chosen power stages.Â Â
With the Prime TRX40-PRO motherboard, ASUS usesÂ Infineon TDA21462 60A power stages. These power stages areÂ de-rated versions of Infineon’s 70A TDA21472 components. With the Prime TRX40-PRO S, we believe that ASUS has upgraded this board’s power stages withÂ TDA21472 power stages, the same power stages that were used in ASUS’s original Zenith II Extreme. TechPowerUp has also come to the same conclusion.Â
Aside from changes to the Prime RTX40-Pro S’ power circuitry and component selection, the motherboard’s design appears to be identical to ASUS’ existing TRX40-PRO offering. The only difference is that P owners will have boards with feature enhanced components, a chance which can only improve the motherboard’s thermal and overclocking performance.Â
ASUS’ original Prime TRX40-Pro is designed to be ASUS’ entry-level TRX40 motherboard, offering the same 16-stage VRM as its bigger brothers while dropping some other features.
For example, ASUS has dropped WiFi and Bluetooth support offered on its higher-end TRX40 design, instead offering users a WiFi-E key. This allows ASUS to lower its pricing while allowing users to add WiFi support if they wish. Sadly, this motherboard also lacks support for Ethernet connections that are higher than 1Gbps, which is a shame for such a high-end motherboard. However, users can still opt to purchase a 10G add-on card if they wish.
