ASUS To Produce Intel NUC Systems

We recently brought you the news that Intel are stopping manufacture of the Next Unit of Compute (NUC) systems. These are very small form-factor rigs that provide a boat load of performance in the most compact size you can imagine, and for much less cost than you might expect.

Naturally we were somewhat disappointed about this as the Intel NUC sat in a market niche that very few others handled. Yes you can get ITX rigs, but even the tiny ones aren’t as small as these, and yes you can get affordable notebooks, but those haven’t got the flexibility or the power to be truly useful. The Intel NUC on the other hand, as we’ve reviewed on these pages, combines fantastic performance with a size that beggars belief.

However, today Intel have announced that they have partnered with ASUS who will be producing their NUC systems from the 10th to the 13th Generation in the future. We’ll let Intel VP Sam Gao explain :

“Our NUC systems product team delivered unique products that spurred innovation in the ultra-small form factor market. As we pivot our strategy to enable ecosystem partners to continue NUC systems product innovation and growth, our priority is to ensure a smooth transition for our customers and partners. I am looking forward to ASUS continuing to deliver exceptional products and supporting our NUC systems customers.”

The ASUS agreement is non-exclusive, but does allow them to develop future designs. Knowing how good ASUS are at the design and production side of things, it seems like a perfect solution. Joe Hsieh, ASUS CO, said :

“Thank you, Intel, for your confidence in us to take the NUC systems product line forward. I am confident that this collaboration will enhance and accelerate our vision for the mini PC – greatly expanding our footprint in areas such as AI and AIoT. We are committed to ensuring the excellent support and service that NUC systems customers expect.”

Reports of the Intel NUC death are greatly exaggerated then. We can’t wait to see what ASUS can bring to the table.
