Intel confirms that Meteor Lake is launching this year
Intel discusses their CPU plans for 2023 and 2024
As part of the company’s Q4 2022 earnings report, Intel has discussed their plans for 2023 and 2024, confirming that they plan to release next-generation Meteor Lake processors later this year and Lunar Lake processors in 2024.
What’s special about Meteor Lake is that it aims to utilise Intel’s new “Flexible Tiled Architecture”, utilising separate CPU, GPU, SOC and IO tiles to create a unified processor using modern chip packaging techniques. Meteor Lake will be Intel’s most advanced processors to date, promising users hybrid cores, lower power draw, and strong performance levels.Â
While Intel has set an H2 2023 release timeframe, relatively little is known about Meteor Lake. Rumour has it that Intel are planning a “Raptor Lake Refresh” later this year, suggesting that Meteor Lake may be mobile-only at launch. If this rumour is true, it sounds like desktop users will need to wait for longer to receive a proper Raptor Lake successor, though it is still possible that we will be receiving desktop-grade Meteor Lake CPUs this year.
Intel has additionally confirmed that Lunar Lake will be coming in 2024. These CPUs are rumoured to be low power CPUs for laptops, aiming to deliver compelling performance levels and systems with long battery lives. Â
In the second half of 2023, Intel also plan to release their Emerald Rapids processors, replacing their recently launched Sapphire Rapids processors. In 2024, Intel also plans to release their Granite/Sierra processors.
Intel has a strong roadmap for 2023 and 2024, though it remains to be seen if this roadmap will bring many major changes to Intel’s desktop product lines. Rumours of a Raptor Lake Refresh have cast doubts on Meteor Lake’s desktop potential, and Emerald Rapid’s H2 2023 launch plans only serve to confirm how long their recently released Sapphire Rapids processors have been delayed.
