Intel’s 28-core Xeon W-3175X will reportedly cost “around $8k”

Last year, Intel announced a 28-core behemoth called the Xeon W-3175X, an unlocked processor that was showcased running at 5GHz using sub-ambient cooling, a monstrous processor which was said to release later in the year.

Now 2018 has come and gone, but Intel is nonetheless determined to launch their overclockable Xeon, alongside compatible motherboards from ASUS and Gigabyte. The processor will ship with a TDP of 255W, a base clock speed of 3.1GHz and a boost clock of 4.3GHz, though the final pricing of the processor remains unknown.

At CES 2019, Anandtech has been able to discuss the Xeon W-3175X with a system integrator, who expected the processor start shipping in Q2 for a price tag of “around $8k” at retail, a price tag that is four times higher than Intel’s flagship X299 processor, the $1999 i9-9980XE.

When combined with a full system’s worth of components, including high-end graphics cards, a 6-channel memory setup, SSDs and all of the other add-ons that would be expected on an ultra-high-end desktop system, it is likely that boutique systems with the Xeon W-3175X will cost well in excess of $12,000, bringing the cost of ultra-high-end PCs to a new level.

Intel’s CES Press Conference will start at 4 pm PST on January 7th, which is midnight time UK time. During their keynote, Intel plans to showcase a “New Era of Computing”, and discuss “ innovations in client computing, data center, artificial intelligence, 5G and more”.
