Leaked Intel test unveils the return of a killer CPU feature with Nova Lake
AVX-512 support is back on the menu with Intel’s Nova Lake CPUs
New CPU tests uncovered by InstLatX64 have seemingly confirmed the return of AVX-512, a major CPU feature that has been missing from Intel CPUs since 11th Gen Core “Rocket Lake” CPUs.
Official AVX-512 support has been missing from Intel CPUs since the release of the company’s first “hybrid” CPUs in 2021. Starting with Alder Lake, Intel’s desktop CPUs have used two CPU architectures, bringing together Performance Cores “P-Cores” and Efficient Cores “E-Cores”. Intel’s P-Cores support AVX-512, but its E-cores don’t, so hybrid CPUs cannot run AVX-512 workloads. To support AVX-512, both core types need AVX-512 support.
Nova Lake could bring back desktop AVX-512 support for Intel
New Intel CPU tests show Intel 24-core and 28-core Nova Lake CPUs running on Linux. These CPUs have base clock speeds of 3.4 GHz and 3.2 GHz, respectively. These CPUs appear to feature AVX-512 support and APX support. This signals that Intel’s next-generation CPUs will be the first to support AVX-512 on desktop platforms since 2021.
Last month, a Linux patch detailed AVX-512 support for Intel’s Nova Lake CPUs. Intel’s new tests appear to confirm the addition of this feature.
AVX-512 is an advanced vector extension that can accelerate certain workloads. With optimised software, AVX-512 can deliver significant performance benefits. For example, the RPCS3 PlayStation 3 emulator runs fastest on CPUs with AVX-512 support, as it can complete many workloads in fewer clock cycles than other CPUs. This significantly accelerates the performance of certain tasks. The same applies to many other workloads. Sadly, AVX-512’s adoption has been hampered by Intel’s lack of AVX-512 support on all of its modern processors.
Note that all AMD Zen 4 and newer CPUs support AVX-512.

With Nova Lake, Intel desktop/client CPU users will finally be able to benefit from AVX-512. AMD has supported AVX-512 on its client CPUs since Zen 4. With support from both AMD and Intel in new mainstream CPUs, here is a chance that broader adoption of AVX-512 software may finally happen. This may even happen within the gaming space, as both the next-generation PlayStation and Xbox should feature CPU cores that support AVX-512 instructions.
