Maxsun reimagines ITX with its Terminator B850 BKB motherboard and its rear-facing PCIe slot

MAXSUN’s new B850 Terminator BKB motherboard could transform the ITX PC market

MAXSUN is rethinking how ITX motherboards are designed. With its new Terminator B850 BKB motherboard, Maxsun has utilised a rear-mounted PCIe slot design that eliminates the need for PCIe riser cards in compatible ITX PC cases.

With this design, PCIe graphics cards can be connected directly to this motherboard. While this eliminates the need for PCIe riser cards, which are often very fragile, PC case compatibility is a concern. While this design should, in theory, make ITX PC building easier, not many ITX PC cases will be compatible with this specific motherboard.

Since this new motherboard is an AMD B850 design, it uses AMD’s AM5 socket. This makes this motherboard compatible with DDR5 memory and Ryzen 7000/9000 series processors. This motherboard also features two M.2 slots and a front-facing PCIe x4 slot.

Given the spatial constraints of many ITX case designs, eliminating the need for a bulky PCIe riser cable could enable the creation of a new wave of compact PC case designs. That said, if other manufacturers do not adopt this design, this motherboard will be little more than a compatibility nightmare. Perhaps this design will be utilised by some system integrators or OEMs. Aside from that, this design is going nowhere without broader industry support.
