Next-generation Ryzen Threadripper CPU spotted with 96 cores

Zen 5 is coming to workstations. A new 96-core Ryzen Threadripper CPU has been spotted in a shipping manifest (via @Olrak_29_) called “Shimada Peak”. This new CPU should feature Zen 5 CPU cores, and feature a similar configuration to AMD’s existing Zen 4 Threadripper flagship.

This new CPU is likely to support AMD’s existing DDR5 HEDT motherboard platforms, such as TRX50 and WRX90. AMD’s newly spotted 96-core CPU features twelve 8-core CCDs and a single IO die, much like AMD’s last-generation Ryzen Threadripper and EPYC 96-core CPU models. Since this new CPU likely uses the same IO die as its predecessor, there is no reason why this new CPU cannot support AMD’s existing HEDT motherboards. After all, only the CCDs have changed with this new release.

While AMD’s Zen 5 CPU launch has not been hugely impressive for gamers, it does deliver major performance gains in areas that will interest workstation/server users. This can be seen in reviews that focus on these workloads. For example, Pheronix spotted major performance gains with Zen 5 in Machine Learning, Database, HPC, and cryptography workloads over Zen 4. This will make Zen 5 Threadripper and EPYC CPUs very attractive for many users.

Currently, it is unknown when AMD will release their next-generation Threadripper and EPYC processors. AMD typically launched new Threadripper CPUs long after their Ryzen desktop and EPYC counterparts. That means that we will likely be waiting until mid-late 2025 before we see new Threadripper CPUs come to market. That said, AMD could surprise us with an earlier than usual launch.
