AMD impresses at CES with their AI-powered FSR 4 tech

AMD showcases huge quality improvements with their new FSR 4 upscaler

At CES 2025, AMD previewed their Radeon RX 9070 series of graphics cards and demoed their new AI-powered FSR 4 upscaling solution. At the event, HardwareUnboxed had the opportunity to see FSR 4 in person, and they were impressed with what AMD has achieved.

AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) upscaling solution is their first to utilise AI technology. This change alone brings AMD’s upscaling solution much closer to Nvidia’s DLSS upscaler technologically. This new upscaler and its future iterations should allow AMD to dramatically boost the image quality that FSR can output.

In the video below, the quality difference between AMD’s FSR 3.1 and FSR 4 upscaler is obvious. There is less streaking, fewer pixelated edges on moving objects, and transparent details are clearer. Even through a camera’s lens and with YouTube compressing the video, we can see clear improvement when moving to and from AMD’s new AI upscaling solution. In person, the difference is likely even easier to perceive.

AMD showcased both their new and old upscaling solutions in “Performance” mode at 4K. This means that both images were using a base resolution of 1080p. Note that no FPS counters were shown as part of this preview. This prevents us from comparing the performance of both upscaling solutions.

AMD’s new AI-powered FSR upscaling solution will be available when AMD launches their Radeon RX 9070 series GPUs.
