AMD officially reveals its Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT GPUs

AMD is finally ready to talk about their Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT

Today has been a long time coming. AMD unveiled their Radeon RX 9070 series at CES, but that reveal left gamers with more questions than answers. Now, almost two months later, AMD are finally ready to tell us everything about their RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT graphics cards. RDNA 4 has finally arrived.

With its Radeon RX 9070 series, AMD aims to deliver a strong 4K gaming experience at 1440p GPU prices. With this in mind, AMD is slotting this new GPU between its Radeon RX 7090 XT/XTX and its lower-cost RX 7900 GRE. What AMD aims to deliver here is high-end performance at more mainstream prices.

AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 Specifications

I know what some of you are thinking. These new GPUs have fewer CUs than AMD’s RX 7900 GRE. How can it deliver more performance? The simple truth is that AMD has radically reworked their Compute Unit designs, enabling more performance per Compute Unit.

With RDNA 4, AMD has new Compute Units, new ray tracing accelerators, new AI accelerators, and a new video encoder. This allows AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture to improve upon RDNA 3 in all areas. See our RDNA 4 Deep Dive article for more information on AMD’s exact changes.

RX 9070 Performance

For the Radeon RX 9070, AMD has promised major performance gains over GPUs like AMD’s RX 6800 XT and RTX 3080. These are the GPUs that AMD expects gamers to be upgrading from.

AMD has stated that its new GPU is 21% faster (on average) across 30 tested games compared to its RX 7900 GRE at 4K. A solid gaming boost for RDNA 4.

At 1440p, AMD has promised similarly high performance gains across the same titles. That said, AMD’s performance gains are highest at 4K.

RX 9070 XT Performance

With their Radeon RX 9070 XT, AMD has promised higher overall performance gains, as should be expected from their top-tier product. Below, this GPU compares favorably with $999+ GPUs from a few years ago. What AMD wants to make clear here is that value for money is increasing with RDNA 4. 4K gaming is becoming more accessible.

Compared with AMD’s RX 7900 GRE, AMD’s RX 9070 XT is 42% faster (on average) at 4K. Overall, AMD says that its RX 9070 XT sits slightly behind its RX 7900 XTX on average but above it in workloads with ray tracing. Ray tracing and AI are where AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture has seen its largest improvements.

At 1440p, AMD reports 38% performance gains on average when compared to their RX 7900 GRE. Again, the largest performance gains are seen in games with ray tracing enabled. That said, 44% performance gains in Black Myth Wukong (without ray tracing) is impressive.

FSR 4 has arrived

With AMD’s RX 9070 series comes FSR 4, AMD’s first AI upscaler. With FSR 4, AMD is delivering higher levels of image quality than its older non-AI upscaling solutions. Additionally, they are promising support for a lot of titles on day-1 thanks to their “upgradable FSR 3.1 API”. Yes, that means that FSR 3.1 games will support AMD’s FSR 4 on day-1.

With FSR 4’s AI upscaling and AMD’s Frame Generation technology, AMD can deliver huge performance uplifts in games. Below, we can see a 3.4x framerate boost in Warhammer 40,000@ Space Marine 2.

Higher Quality Media Encoders

Another upgrade with RDNA 4 is to AMD’s media engines. Image quality has been greatly improved, allowing for higher quality game recordings and streams on Radeon hardware. Below we can see 1080p H.264 6MBps recordings on RDNA 3 and RDNA 4 GPUs. Simply put, the quality difference is night and day.

AMD’s RX 9070 series will be released on March 6th

AMD’s RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT will be available on March 6th. GPUs will be available from Acer, ASUS, PowerColor, XFX, ASRock, Gigabyte, Sapphire, and other AIBs.

Sadly, AMD would not let us know their RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 GPU prices ahead of their official reveal. We will update this article as soon as we can with AMD’s MSRP pricing for their Radeon RX 9070 series GPUs.

– Update – AMD has confirmed the MSRP pricing of their RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT.

  • Radeon RX 9070 XT – $599
  • Radeon RX 9070 – $549
