ASUS pushes overclocking with 450W ROG Astral RTX 5080 BIOS update

ASUS has boosted its top RTX 5080 model with higher power limits for overclocking

ASUS’ ROG Astral RTX 5080 is one of the most powerful RTX 5080 graphics cards available (See our review here). Now, ASUS has given this GPU a boost, pushing its power limits higher to enable increased overclocking headroom.

At launch, ASUS’ ROG Astral RTX 5080 had a maximum TGP of 400W. Now (via Videocardz), ASUS has released a new VBIOS update that boosts this limit to 450W. With this power, gamers have more tools for GPU overclocking, creating an avenue towards higher GPU performance.

According to Techpowerup, most RTX 5080 GPUs have a default power limit of 360W. ASUS’ ROG Astral model already surpassed that with its 400W limit. Now, users can extend this limit to 450W, 90W higher than a standard RTX 5080. That’s a lot of extra power. Through overclocking, users can turn that extra power into extra gaming performance.

With this power limit increase, RTX 5080 overclockers can access as much power as Nvidia’s last-generation flagship, the RTX 4090. Currently, it remains unknown how much added overclocking headroom this TGP increase will unlock, or why ASUS found it necessary to raise this power limit.

It is suspected that ASUS released this GPU BIOS update after discovering that other RTX 5080 makers have created RTX 5090 GPUs with 450W power limits. Gigabyte’s RTX 5080 Gaming OC GPU reportedly has a power limit of 450W.
