der8auer unveils unreleased Nvidia dual 12VHPWR power adapter

Nvidia created a 6x 8-pin to dual 12VHPWR connector for its unreleased TITAN ADA graphics card

Der8auer, the well-known overclocker, has showcased an insane 900W power adaptor from Nvidia. This power adapter is an Nvidia dual 12VHPWR cable that was intended to power the company’s unreleased RTX TITAN ADA graphics card, which der8auer previously showcased.

Note that this custom power adapter turns six 8-pin PCIe power cables into two 12VHPWR connectors. Note that each 8-pin PCIe power cable is capable of delivering 125W of power. That means that this power adapter can deliver up to 900W of power to a connected graphics card.

Given the adapter’s use of moulded parts, it’s likely that this GPU power adapter is an early production prototype. Creating moulds for these parts is an expensive process, implying that Nvidia intended to release this power adapter at some point. This makes sense given the existence of RTX TITAN ADA graphics cards.

Based on der8auer’s video, Nvidia’s dual 12VHPWR adapter lacks sensors that could confirm that every 8-pin power plug is used with this adapter. der8auer showcased this adapter being used with most 8-pin cables disconnected. This makes this adapter potentially unsafe to use. However, this requires users to use this adapter improperly.

Newer Nvidia 12VHPWR/12V-2×6 (16-pin) power cables can sense if all connected 8-pin cables are in use. This ensures that users cannot power on their graphics cards without enough 8-pin cables connected. Note that this adapter is dated 2022, implying that this GPU was in the works ahead of Nvidia’s RTX 50 series GPU launch.

Will this cable be used with Nvidia’s RTX 6090?

Nvidia’s Titan ADA graphics card may have been scrapped, but this power connector could potentially be used with future 600W+ graphics cards. Nvidia’s RTX 5090 already pushes the limits of what 16-pin GPU power connectors can handle. That means that Nvidia will need to boost its power efficiency post-Blackwell. Alternatively, Nvidia could use dual-12VHPWR/dual-12V-2×6 cables.
