Did AMD tease RDNA 3 FSR 4 support in its reveal slides?
AMD shows FSR 4 enabled on a Radeon RX 7800 XT in official slides
One of our eagle-eyed Forum members (thanks Dicehunter) has noticed that one of AMD’s recent HYPR-RX gaming slides shows the company’s FSR 4 upscaler tech enabled on a Radeon RX 7800 XT (RDNA 3) graphics card. As of now, AMD’s FSR 4 technology is exclusive to AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 series (RDNA 4) graphics cards, and is incompatible with older AMD Radeon GPUs.
At CES 2025, it was suggested that FSR 4 could work on RDNA 3 graphics cards with the optimisations. After all, RDNA 3 GPUs feature AI accelerators (RDNA 2 and older don’t). Even so, RDNA 3 doesn’t have the same levels of AI power as RDNA 4. That’s why FSR 4 is only available on RDNA 4 GPUs right now.
The question now is if AMD’s RX 7800 XT/FSR 4 slide is a mistake from AMD, or an intentional tease. If it is the former, AMD needs to spend more time checking its press decks. If its the latter, that’s great news for owners of RDNA 3 GPUs.
AMD’s AI upscaler can work on RDNA 3 GPUs if AMD can make their AI models more performant. The question is if AMD can do this without degrading FSR 4’s image quality. Like DLSS, AMD will update/upgrade its FSR 4 upscaler over time with AI model updates to enhance its quality. If AMD can also create a more performant model, it should make FSR 4 viable on some of AMD’s older graphics cards.
So will FSR 4 come to RDNA 3 GPUs? Maybe. It’s definitely an option that’s worth exploring, especially if AMD wants to get more developers to support FSR 4.
