DOOM Will Run at 1080p and 60 FPS on Consoles

DOOM is easily one of the most influential franchises in the First Person Shooter Genre, so much so that for a time FPS games were simply know as DOOM clones by many of those in the video game industry.

When a new DOOM game is released the game has a lot to live up to, not only when it comes to fun gameplay but also when to comes to visuals and design. DOOM 2016 not only plans to be one of the only games that will run at 1080p 60FPS on all platforms at release, but plans to be the best looking game at this framerate and resolution on consoles. Not only that but the game will have a 13-hour long campaign, which is something that is very rare for a modern shooter and it will contain a also contain several new multiplayer modes.

We want players to wonder how DOOM and idTech 6 games can be so visually stunning at 60 frames-per-second at 1080p on all platforms, when other titles cannot even achieve a similar look at 30 frames-per-second. Our goal is to be the best-looking game at 1080p at 60fps.

idTech 6 allows the artists and designers to quickly decorate the world with fine details. idTech 6’s physically based renderer and dynamic lighting system allows our artists to make our characters and environments more realistic and stunning than ever before.

When we hear about the resolutions and framerates of the console versions of games many of us PC gamers simply ignore it, thinking that with powerful enough hardware that we will easily be able to play the game at a higher resolutions and framerates, but we must remember that games that run at 60FPS consoles typically run well on PC.

Some examples of this is the 1080p 60FPS console version of Metal Gear Solid V and Sniper Elite, which are both games that are pretty easy to run on PC, with Sniper Elite easily capable of running at 100+ FPS on modern setups. On the other end of the spectrum we have titles that run at sub-1080p at 30FPS on consoles like Assassin’s Creed Unity, that is a title that is difficult to run on PC, especially at a steady 60FPS or higher.

Hopes are high that the PC version of DOOM 2016 will run well on PC, with many gamers already expecting to be able to easily make use of high resolution and high refresh rate monitors with ease on modern hardware. One of my hopes for the PC version of DOOM 2016 it that the game will really show other developers that great visuals and high framerates are not only possible, but can really help gameplay, so let’s hope that both the PC and console versions of DOOM are solid.

DOOM is set to release on May 13, 2016 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
