EK’s Quantum RTX 3090 FE Vector Active Backplate is a Cooling Monster
EK’s Quantum RTX 3090 FE Vector Active Backplate is a Cooling Monster
EK’s Active backplate technology enables levels of cooling performance that are impossible using traditional water blocks, and this is especially true with Nvidia’s RTX 3090 graphics cards, where all models feature both front and rear-mounted GDDR6X memory modules. Â
With their EK-Quantum Vector FE RTX 3090 D-RGB Active Backplate, EK’s delivering next-level liquid cooling performance for Nvidia’s RTX 3090 Founders Edition. This water block is designed to compliment EK’s existing EK-Quantum Vector FE RTX 3090 â Special Edition water block, delivering both front and rear cooling to Nvidia’s RTX 3090 Founders Edition graphics card.Â
A Liquid Cooling Sandwich
With EK’s Active Backplate, RTX 3090 Founders Edition users can sandwich their graphics card between two actively cooled water blocks, providing an extra level of rigidity to the sandwiched PCB and additional cooling to the RTX 3090’s core, memory and power management components.
All important parts of the RTX 3090’s PCB will receive additional cooling, a factor that could allow users to push their overclocks further or keep GPU thermals at more manageable levels.Â
The only downside of this active backplate solution is that it will make Nvidia’s RTX 3090 Founders Edition thicker by adding a single slot of thickness to the rear of the graphics card’s PCB.Â

A high price to pay for an ultra-premium liquid cooling product
EK’s Quantum Vector FE RTX 3090 Active Backplate will cost â¬249.90, and that makes sense given the low number of liquid-cooled RTX 3090 Founders Edition graphics cards that are in the wild.Â
EK’s cooling solution is catering to the needs of a minority of RTX 3090 users, and someone needs to pay for the engineering time that it took to create this ultra-high-end liquid cooling solution. How many people have liquid-cooled a RTX 3090 Founders Edition, and how many of those users are EK water block users that desire additional cooling performance?Â
While this water block does feature 22 individually addressable RGB LEDs, it is hard to see how material costs justify their â¬249.90 price tag. That said, this is an exclusive add-on to a custom water block for a limited-run Founders Edition graphics card.Â
EK expects to ship their EK-Quantum Vector FE RTX Active Backplate in early September 2021. Pre-orders are now available from EK’s web store.Â
