FSR 4 game support explodes thanks to OptiScaler mod
Modders are fixing FSR 4’s biggest problem, its low game compatibility
Alongside their Radeon RX 9070 series of GPUs (review here), AMD released their FSR 4 AI upscaler. At launch, the upscaler supported “30+” games, and by the end of this year, AMD expects 75+ games to be supported. Simply put, this isn’t enough to compete with Nvidia DLSS, an upscaler that is available in most modern PC releases. Thankfully, OptiScaler is here to help.
OptiScaler (Github here) is a tool that allows PC gamers to replace upscalers with alternative upscalers. The tool can enable users to replace DLSS with FSR or XeSS (or vice versa). Now, the tool supports FSR 4, allowing gamers to utilise AMD’s new upscaler in previously unsupported games. Below is a guide from High Yield on how to enable FSR 4 in Cyberpunk 2077.

The developers of OptiScaler have created a “FSR 4 Compatibility List” for their tool. So far, it looks like FSR 4 doesn’t work well on games that use the Vulkan API. Perhaps this will change as AMD releases newer versions of FSR 4? Sadly, FSR 4 will not work on every game with OptiScaler. However, it works on a lot of great titles.
OptiScaler can be used to enable FSR 4 support on Amid Evil, Atomic Heart, Avowed, Black Myth: Wukong, Cyberpunk 2077, Dragon’s Dogma II, The Witcher 3, and many other titles. Below we can see it used with Cyberpunk 2077.
FSR 4 Image Quality with OptiScaler in Cyberpunk 2077
Above and below we have videos from BNCH bench showing FSR 4 in Cyberpunk 2077. Using the mod, upscaling quality increases tremendously. FSR 4 in Performance mode looks better than FSR 3.1 in Quality Mode. There is less aliasing, greater image clarity, and less visual corruption/blur on transparent elements. All-in-all, FSR 4 delivers a huge image quality boost for owners of supported GPUs.
Note that OptiScaler shouldn’t be used in online games, as it can trigger anti-cheat systems.
The only downside of FSR 4 is its lack of game support compared to DLSS. AMD needs to move fast to bring FSR 4 support to as many games as possible. By doing this, AMD can erode Nvidia’s DLSS advantage, making their GPUs more appealing to gamers everywhere. While OptiScaler is a useful tool, nothing beats direct game integrations. AMD needs to push developers to get FSR 4 into as many games as possible.
