Nvidia DLSS 4 is here, and it improves everything
Nvidia has revealed DLSS 4, and it transforms every aspect of DLSS
Alongside their RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti, and RTX 5070, Nvidia has revealed a new generation of DLSS. DLSS 4 has arrived, and it is here to give higher levels of image quality to all GeForce RTX users.
Nvidia has moved from Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to a new transformer model with this interaction of DLSS. These new models enjoy double the parameters of Nvidia’s old DLSS models. This enables greater levels of image stability, reduced ghosting, smoother edges and more detail in motion. In layman’s terms, DLSS has just received an image quality boost.
With DLSS 4 comes a new feature called DLSS Multi-Frame Generation, which boosts Nvidia’s Frame Generation technology on RTX 50 series graphics cards.
New models for DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation, and Ray Reconstruction
All aspects of DLSS have been altered. This included DLAA, DLSS Super Resolution, DLSS Frame Generation, and DLSS Ray Reconstruction. With these changes, DLSS is stepping ahead of other upscaling solutions.
With Nvidia’s new DLSS Frame Generation model, they have boosted speed by 40% and reduced VRAM usage by 30%. For Warhammer 40K: Darktide, this results in a 10% boost in framerate and a 400MB reduction in VRAM usage. In other words, DLSS Frame Generation just got better.
Below, we can see the impacts of DLSS 2, DLSS 3, and DLSS 4 in Cyberpunk 2077. Over brute force native resolution rendering, DLSS provides users with a 9x framerate boost.
Improved DLSS for everyone
The image quality improvements of Nvidia’s DLSS 4 AI models are coming to all GeForce RTX GPU owners. RTX 30-series and 20-series owners can enjoy DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA, and DLSS Ray Reconstruction. RTX 40 series owners can also enjoy Nvidia’s improved Frame Generation technology.
Only Nvidia’s RTX 50 series GPU owners can use DLSS Multi-Frame Generation. Nvidia claims that only their 50-series GPUs have the tensor performance to make this level of frame generation worthwhile. This is thanks to the RTX 50 series’ improved Tensor cores.
Multi-Frame Generation – taking Frame Generation to the next level
With DLSS Multi-Frame Generation, RTX 50 series GPUs generate three AI frames for every rendered frame. This means that Nvidia is generating three times as many frames as before with multi-frame generation. This is what enabled Nvidia’s 2x performance boost claims for their RTX 50 series GPU models.
DLSS 4 makes ultra-high refresh rate 4K gaming possible
The main benefit of DLSS 4 Multi-Frame Generation is that it makes ultra-high refresh rate 4K gaming displays useful. Until now, many gamers have asked why 4K 240Hz displays exist. With DLSS 4, this level of performance is now achievable. If anything, this new tech is creating the need for even faster 4K displays.
DLSS 4 is coming to 75 games on day-1
On day-0, Nvidia’s new DLSS technology will be supported by 75 games and apps. Below, we can see that games like Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and more will support it whenever Nvidia’s RTX 50 series GPUs launch.
Nvidia has transformed DLSS. Better still, all GeForce RTX owners can benefit from these new AI models.
