Nvidia releases GeForce hotfix hours after mainline driver release

Nvidia releases new GeForce hotfix driver less than 24 hours after their mainline driver release

In less than 24 hours, Nvidia has released two GeForce GPU drivers for Windows. First, Nvidia releases its GeForce 581.42 driver for Battlefield 6. Now, Nvidia GeForce has released a hotfix for that driver.

Thankfully, the bug that this hotfix addresses is a minor one. It only impacts users of Nvidia’s Smooth Motion technology. Smooth Motion is a driver-based frame generation technology which allows Nvidia to create AI-generated frames for games that lack built-in/official DLSS Frame Generation support.

Note that Nvidia’s Smooth Motion bug can cause games to crash if their install directory contains Chinese characters. Obviously, this bug is bad news for gamers in China. However, gamers in other nations are much less likely to be impacted by this issue.

GeForce Hotfix Display Driver version 581.47 is based on our latest Game Ready Driver 581.42.

This Hotfix addresses the following:

  • Games may crash if the installed game directory contains Chinese characters while Smooth Motion is enabled [5537563]

Nvidia Hotfix driver release notes

Regardless of the severity of this bug, it is embarrassing for Nvidia to be forced to release a hotfix less than 24 hours after their mainline GeForce driver release. It is likely that Nvidia will be changing its internal testing practices to avoid language-based driver issues in the future.
